Search Engine-Friendly Move Upgrade from WordPress

WordPress.com (see our review here) today announced an SEO-friendly way to take your WordPress.com hosted site and host it elsewhere, under your own domain.

The new paid upgrade is called Offsite Redirect. What it does is that it sends traffic destined for your pages on WordPress.com to your new domain, using a so-called 301-redirect. This redirect tells Google and other search engines that the move is permanent, letting them update their indexing and you keep your SEO ranking.

Offsite Redirect is available from the Upgrades section in your WordPress.com account and costs $12 a year.

What do you think of hosted services offering paid upgrades to let you take your data elsewhere?
